Our amazing private boat tour of Oviedo Lagoon from Santo Domingo takes you to Jaragua National Park in the deep southwestern Domincan Republic. Declared a Biosphere Preserve by UNESCO (United Nations), this park is home to Oviedo Lagoon, a large coastal saltwater lagoon that was once part of a marine channel that separated the island into two smaller islands millions of years ago. A memorable boat tour of the lagoon and its calm waters takes you to many of the more than 20 small islands that fill this spectacular body of water. Each of these islands has unique dry forest vegetation and serves as a refuge for a wide array of native and migratory species of birds making Oviedo Lagoon one of the premier birdwatching destinations in all the Caribbean. It is also home to several species of large iguanas, endemic fish species, large flocks of flamingos that get into the thousands, and a wide variety of birds all year round. Definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the visit, Oviedo Lagoon is surely one of the Dominican Republic’s most important ecotourism destinations.
